How will this course be run?
-
This course has two
components: a lecture portion and an experiment portion.
-
The lecture portion will be conducted via
Internet. All students are required to read the lecture material before
attending the experiment portion.
-
The lecture material usually consists of
i)
a slide presentation (in PDF format) with an accompanying audio (in RealAudio
format),
ii)
a lab manual (in PDF format), which will contain the slide presentation
in more detail, plus detailed instruction on the experiment.
-
The experiment portion will be done in the
Multimedia Lab (LC008) at the time your lab session is scheduled. Your are
required to attend the experiment session at your designated time. The Lab
Instructor is available to give you more detailed instructions and answer
questions only at the scheduled lab sessions. If you cannot attend the lab at
your designated lab session, you can prearrange with the lab instructor
to complete the same lab in the other session.
-
You must read the on-line lecture and the
lab manual before the lab session. Pay attention to "What
to bring to the lab" in the lecture material.
-
In rare occasions when you cannot come to
the lab for the experiment, and if you have access to a computer that has
the appropriate software/hardware set-up, you may accomplish your lab outside
the Multimedia Lab. But you must inform the lab instructor before hand. You will lose your point for the quiz for that
week, though.
-
If you cannot finish the experiment at the
lab-session, the Multimedia Lab is open at other hours for you to complete
your lab. See Open
Lab Hours.
-
You are required to hand in a lab-report after
every experiment. The lab-report for a given week must be hand-in to the
Lab Instructor in the beginning of your scheduled lab session for the next
week, unless otherwise specified. The lab-report should be prepared by
a word-processor (e.g. Word), and if necessary, accompanied by a diskette
(e.g. CD) containing your lab work.
-
There will be a quiz before each lab, with one question
relating to what you learnt in the last experiment, and another question
relating to what was discussed in the on-line lecture and the lab manual
for the new experiment, which you must read before coming to the lab.
-
- Exam:
-
- There will be a final exam at the end of the class
in the final exam week, covering both theoretical principles and
experimental materials.
-
- Grading policy and
late lab-report:
-
Each
experiment has a full-grade of 10 points. Attending the lab in-time and
making a good effort in completing the experiment will give you 4 points.
The remaining 6 points depends on the submitted report. Every report submitted
late will have a deduction of 2 points.
-
The final grade = 60% lab + 20% quiz + 20%exam.
