- Prerequisites: EE 3054, EE 3404 and EL 630
If you have not had a signals and systems
course (e.g., EE 3054) and you are considering taking the class please
stop by and talk to me before the semester starts.
The course provides an introduction to the technology and underlying
principles of wireless communications. Elementary examination of the science
and technology of wireless communications including radio signal propagation,
interference-limited communications, coding and modulation. Building blocks
of wireless networks. Essential functions of all cellular telephone systems.
Analysis of the different ways in which the world's leading systems perform
these functions.
Tentative list of topics that will be covered:
- Elements and functions of cellular systems
- Short range radio propagation
- Modulation and detection of digital mobile radio signals
- Analog cellular systems
- TDMA digital cellular systems
- Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM)
- Introduction to spread spectrum communications
- Code division multiple access (CDMA) cellular systems
- Grading:
- Two Midterms, 25% each
- Final, 40%
- Homeworks, 10%
