Welcome to the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at POLY
Polytechnic and IEEE
| IEEE and Polytechnic |
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the
world's leading professional society for electrical and computer
engineers. It has more than 350,000 members who live in 150 different
countries. The IEEE was formed in 1963 by the merger of the American
Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) that was started in 1884 by
electrical power engineers, and the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE)
that was started in 1912 by wireless communication engineers. |
Samuel Sheldon, who was the first head of Polytechnic's EE Department
served as the second president of the AIEE. Ernst Weber, who was the
fourth head of the EE department, and later President of Polytechnic,
served terms as both President of the IRE and as the first President of
the IEEE. |
Over the years many Polytechnic faculty and alumni have served in
editorial and leadership positions in the AIEE, IRE and IEEE, and have
received IEEE honors for their professional achievements. The
university is proud that four of its faculty have been awarded the
presigeous Education Medal of the IEEE. (Enrst Weber, John Truxal, Mischa
Schwartz, and Athanasios Papoulis) |
Most recently, Joel Snyder, who taught in Polytechnic's EE department for
many years, has been elected to be President-Elect of the IEEE for 2000
and President for 2001. |
