One chapter of my thesis introduces a generalization of the digital Butterworth filter,
that unifies the classical Butterworth filter and the maximally flat symmetric FIR filter.
- The degrees of the numerator and the denominator of the new filters
do not have to be the same, as they are for the classical lowpass transfer
functions.
- New explicit formulas are provided for the square magnitude response.
- The generalization specializes to the classical Butterworth
filter and to the well known symmetric FIR filter.
- For the correct parameter values, the new filters are scaling filters for
orthogonal wavelet bases.
The results are summarized in
"Generalized Digital Butterworth Filter Design".
A program for the design of these filters is part of the
Matlab 5: Signal Processing Toolbox.
An additional program, not available in that toolbox, is provided here.
