The Future of Telecommunications

Telecommunications is at a crossroads. Local telephone companies, threatened by cable and wireless, are beginning to offer fiber to the home to compete for video services. Voice over IP challenges established structures of pricing and taxation. Wi-Fi may limit cellular to voice and short message services. Yet the demand for telecommunication services continues to increase.

What technologies will carry the increase in services?

This symposium is in honor of the 150 years that Brooklyn's Polytechnic University has served to educate the engineers that have driven technology forward along its remarkable route.

From the system of cables on the Brooklyn bridge to the fiber optic cables spanning the earth, graduates of Polytechnic have played a major role in creating and implementing the technologies that bring our world ever closer together.
